How Does PCOS Affect Hair Growth?
PCOS is a condition where sufferers have many small cysts on their ovaries. This syndrome affects one in four women. Usually women don’t find out that they have PCOS until they start trying for a family. Some women will have many symptoms including weight gain, hormonal imbalances, acne, depression, irregular periods and excessive facial and body hair.
Another word describing this excess hair growth is Hirsutism. It is caused by an imbalance of hormones. In women with PCOS the ovaries make more androgens (including the male hormone, testosterone). The increase of testosterone is responsible for the increase in hair growth. This condition can be very distressing for women due to the excess amount of facial hair that they have.
There are many ways that this hair can be removed such as waxing, shaving, threading, many of which can be painful, irritating to the skin, very time consuming as they need to be done regularly, and expensive.
The newest way of removing this unwanted hair is by laser or Intense pulse light. An intense pulse light sends a wave of light that goes to the hair and is absorbed damaging the follicle resulting in a reduction of hair growth. The long term effects of this are great as this improves quality of life by enhancing self esteem and confidence.
